Bryans Road resident Malcolm Xavier Fluellyn, 27, pleaded guilty in February to various charges following an investigation by the sheriff's office into inappropriate sexual contact and interactions between he and students at General Smallwood Middle School, the state's attorney's office announced.

On April 16, Charles County State's Attorney Tony Covington said that Fluellyn has been sentenced to 46 years in prison with all but 15 years suspended followed by supervised probation for five years when he is released.

In February last year, a School Resource Officer contacted the Charles County Sheriff's Office to report a possible sexual assault between the former sub and multiple students.

According to investigators, Fluellyn was working as a permanent substitute teacher at the school from December 2022 through February 2023.

Prosecutors say that Fluellyn inappropriately touched the victims, some on numerous occasions, at the school while he worked there. Additionally, Fluellyn reached out to some of the victims on Instagram and made inappropriate sexual comments about their bodies.

His victims ranged between the ages of 12 and 13 years old.

After being alerted to the allegations, Fluellyn was immediately removed from his position by school administrators, officials said.

The subsequent sheriff’s investigation led to the discovery of multiple instances where he had inappropriate physical contact with students, as well as unscrupulous exchanges with minors on social media and through text messages.

Specifically, Fleullyn pleaded guilty on Feb. 26 to two counts of sexual abuse of a minor and six counts of first-degree sexual offense.

Officials noted that Fluellyn was employed with Charles County Public Schools during the 2022 and 2023 school years and also worked for one day at Matthew Henson Middle School in December 2022, though there have been no reported allegations from students at that school.

Fluellyn had faced up to 50 years in prison.

“Members of this community, and any community, should be able to send their children to school without having to worry that an adult will sexually prey on them in any way," prosecutors said. "It’s just not acceptable.”
